I have created, retouched or adapted all these icons using Microangelo for Windows 95 (shareware from http://www.impactsoft.com/). Most of them are best viewed in 256 colours. I hope you enjoy them. If you do, or even if you don't, please send an email to dg-yates@dircon.co.uk I'm planning to release further collections of icons and animated cursors in the future. Email me if you wish to be informed of future releases. These icons are freeware but please distribute this file intact. I'm happy to take requests. Send me a good quality image and I'll produce you an icon! Icon Hints and Tips -------------------------- Q: How can I change my desktop folder icons in Windows 95? A: Microsoft decided that it would be far too dangerous to allow the average user to change the folder icons. Fortunately there is a workaround. Create a directory called FOLDERS (or whatever you want). Drag all your folders to this directory. Then, drag them all back as shortcuts. Hey presto! You can now change their icons. Q: How can I change the MY COMPUTER, RECYCLE BIN or NETWORK NEIGHBOURHOOD icons? A: Use the Microsoft Plus Pack (from Microsoft) or Microangelo Engineer from: http://www.impactsoft.com/ Q: How can I get rid of the horrible shortcut arrows from my icons? A: There are 3 methods: (i) The easiest is to use the latest release of TWEAKUI which is a Microsoft "Powertoy" for Windows 95. Some people find this application unreliable. (ii) Use Microangelo Engineer. (iii) If all else fails, you can edit the registry manually: Open regedit. Click on the + to expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Find the key lnkfile and click on it. Delete the value ISshortcut. Find the key Piffile and click on it. Delete the value ISshortcut. Q: I like the shortcut arrows but I would like to have a different style of arrow A: You can change the shortcut arrows to something different using Microangelo Engineer or TweakUI. Q: How do I get rid of all the icons on my desktop? A: Using the Policy Editor: Select Local User / Shell / Restrictions Select Hide all items on Desktop Q: How can I have the icon of my BMP files as a small picture of the bitmap? A: Using REGEDIT: Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PAINT.PICTURE\DefaultIcon Change the (default) value to "%1" Q: How do I make the icons snap to a grid so that I can have groups of icons all nicely lined up (the ARRANGE ICONS feature lines the whole lot up)? A: Right click on the desktop and select LINE UP ICONS. Q: How do I get rid of the NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD and RECYCLE BIN icons? A: The easiest way is to get hold of TweakUI from the Microsoft web page at: http://www.microsoft.com/ Q: How do I convert an ICO file to a GIF or JPG file? A: Two methods: (i) Press PRINT SCREEN. This takes a snapshot of your desktop and saves it to the clipboard. Go to your favourite image editing program e.g. Adobe Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. Create a new file, paste and then crop the icon. Save as GIF, JPG or whatever. (ii) Open the ICO file in an icon editor (e.g. Microangelo), copy the icon to the clipboard and then paste it into your graphics application. Q: Can you recommend a good icon editing program for Windows 95? A: I use Microangelo. Easy to use and shareware. Q: How do I extract icons from EXE or DLL files? A: You need a program like Microangelo or Icon Demon. Q: How can I view icons in 256 colours? A: First of all, you need a graphics driver which supports more than 256 colours working in High Colour mode or True Colour Mode. Then you need to get Microsoft's Plus Pack, Microangelo or other available external program and activate the option to view icons in all possible colours. The Happy Icon collection by Andy Watts has an "Icon Colour Level" program. Alternatively, you can also give yourself 256 colour icons without any external program by modifying the following registry entries: Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Config\0001\Display\Settings Look for a BitsPerPixel string. Then under: HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics add a string value: Shell Icon BPP and give it a value corresponding to the previous (16 or 24) NOTE: If there is no WindowMetrics key just add it; the single entry for Shell Icon BPP will work.(Thanks to Andy Watts). Q: Can I change all my Explorer folder icons so that they default to something other than the yellow drawer? A: The easiest way I've seen of doing this is by using Microangelo Engineer. Andy Watts has some alternative folder icons which you can use without having Microangelo. They are at: http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/watts/andy/happy.html Q: You can have animated cursors in Windows 95 but can you have animated icons? A: Sadly not. This feature is available in OS/2 Warp so perhaps Microsoft ought to catch up in this respect. The Recycle bin is the closest you get to an animated icon in Windows 95.
